Walking the track and becoming a stato!

posted by Lee McKenzie on 25/03/2009

Tuesday in Melbourne was a nice gentle introduction which involved lunch with some of the BBC team before heading into Federation Square to watch The Robbers, Eddie Jordan’s band. After his set, we all relaxed with a drink and talked about the plans for the week. The atmosphere is really building in the city and after Eddie’s band had finished BMW started one of the cars in the square, much to the excitement of the gathered fans.

It is now Wednesday morning and I am pretty jet-lagged and have been up since 4am. I am just finishing off writing my notes, stats and driver profiles at the moment. I always carry all the information I need in one book and update it after every race. It takes a lot of effort but it is so helpful and important for me to have all the info I need at my finger tips, especially live in a pit lane, removed from any laptops etc.

In an hours time I am going to get my accreditation and then take a walk round the circuit, another important thing I do before each race. The 3.3 miles of Albert Park will be a good way to clear my head after all this research. I always try and walk it with a driver, old or current, as you learn so much more.

The weather is a bit patchy and it has been raining this morning. I think Jake Humphrey, Jonathan Legard and I will hop on a tram and stay dry for as long as we can until we get to the track. Maybe I will pay today, I thought they were free but apparently not!

Better not delay any longer and get on with my stats! I’ll update you all tomorrow as we get closer to the cars getting out on the track!
